Charles Mix County is a county located in the state of South Dakota. As of 2000, the population is 9,350. Its county seat is Lake Andes.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,979 km² (1,150 mi²). 2,843 km² (1,098 mi²) of it is land and 136 km² (53 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.57% water.

The county is divided into twenty-four townships: Bryan, Carroll, Choteau Creek, Darlington, Forbes, Goose Lake, Hamilton, Highland, Howard, Jackson, Kennedy, La Roche, Lake George, Lawrence, Lone Tree, Moore, Platte, Plain Center, Rhoda, Roe, Rouse, Signal, Waheheh, White Swan; and one area of unorganized territory: Castalia.

There are 3,343 households out of which 34.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.10% are married couples living together, 11.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.40% are non-families. 28.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.74 and the average family size is 3.37.

In the county, the population is spread out with 32.00% under the age of 18, 7.10% from 18 to 24, 23.20% from 25 to 44, 20.40% from 45 to 64, and 17.30% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 96.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.10 males.
