Yankton County is a county located in the state of South Dakota. As of 2000, the population is 21,652. Its county seat is Yankton.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,379 km² (533 mi²). 1,351 km² (522 mi²) of it is land and 29 km² (11 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.08% water.

The county is divided into nine townships: Gayville, Jamesville, Marindahl, Mayfield, Mission Hill, Turkey Valley, Utica, Violin, Walshtown; and two areas of unorganized territory: Southeast Yankton and West Yankton.

There are 8,840 housing units at an average density of 7/km² (17/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 95.10% White, 1.16% Black or African American, 1.63% Native American, 0.42% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.74% from other races, and 0.91% from two or more races. 1.82% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
