Cannon County is a county located in the state of Tennessee. As of 2000, the population is 12,826. Its county seat is Woodbury.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 688 km² (266 mi²). 688 km² (266 mi²) of it is land and 0 km² (0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.02% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 12,826 people, 4,998 households, and 3,643 families residing in the county. The population density is 19/km² (48/mi²). There are 5,420 housing units at an average density of 8/km² (20/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 96.87% White, 1.46% Black or African American, 0.33% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.40% from other races, and 0.81% from two or more races. 1.22% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,998 households out of which 33.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.60% are married couples living together, 9.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.10% are non-families. 24.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.53 and the average family size is 2.99.

The county was named for former Tennessee governor Newton Cannon.
