Overview of Cocke County, Tennessee

Cocke County is a county located in the state of Tennessee. As of 2000, the population is 33,565. Its county seat is Newport.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,148 km² (443 mi²). 1,125 km² (434 mi²) of it is land and 23 km² (9 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.97% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 33,565 people, 13,762 households, and 9,715 families residing in the county. The population density is 30/km² (77/mi²). There are 15,844 housing units at an average density of 14/km² (36/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 96.16% White, 1.99% Black or African American, 0.40% Native American, 0.15% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.32% from other races, and 0.96% from two or more races. 1.05% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 13,762 households out of which 29.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.10% are married couples living together, 13.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.40% are non-families. 25.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.41 and the average family size is 2.87.

In the county, the population is spread out with 22.80% under the age of 18, 8.30% from 18 to 24, 28.80% from 25 to 44, 26.40% from 45 to 64, and 13.60% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 94.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.80 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $25,553, and the median income for a family is $30,418. Males have a median income of $26,062 versus $18,826 for females.
