Greene County is a county located in the state of Tennessee. As of 2000, the population is 62,909. Its county seat is Greeneville.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,616 km² (624 mi²). 1,610 km² (622 mi²) of it is land and 6 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.39% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 62,909 people, 25,756 households, and 18,132 families residing in the county. The population density is 39/km² (101/mi²). There are 28,116 housing units at an average density of 17/km² (45/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 96.42% White, 2.11% Black or African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.27% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.43% from other races, and 0.56% from two or more races. 1.02% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 25,756 households out of which 29.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.70% are married couples living together, 10.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.60% are non-families. 25.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.38 and the average family size is 2.84.

In the county, the population is spread out with 22.20% under the age of 18, 8.10% from 18 to 24, 28.70% from 25 to 44, 26.10% from 45 to 64, and 14.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 95.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.40 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $30,382, and the median income for a family is $36,889. Males have a median income of $26,331 versus $20,304 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,746. 14.50% of the population and 11.20% of families are below the poverty line.
