Johnson County is a county located in the state of Tennessee. As of 2000, the population is 17,499. Its county seat is Mountain City.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 784 km² (303 mi²). 773 km² (298 mi²) of it is land and 11 km² (4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.41% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 17,499 people, 6,827 households, and 4,751 families residing in the county. The population density is 23/km² (59/mi²). There are 7,879 housing units at an average density of 10/km² (26/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 96.40% White, 2.42% Black or African American, 0.34% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.23% from other races, and 0.46% from two or more races. 0.86% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
