However, Tennessee soon rejoined the United States. On July 18, 1866, Tennessee ratified the article that abolished slavery, leaving the Confederation of the Southern States.

In the 60s and 70s of the 20th century, Tennessee became known again. As the focal point of the civil rights movement, the state received international attention.

The Great Smokey Mountains National Park lies on the border between North Carolina and Tennessee. It has existed since 1934. Today it is the most visited national park in the USA. The park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
