Overview of Baylor County, Texas

Baylor County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 4,093. Its county seat is Seymour. Baylor is named for Henry Weidner Baylor, a surgeon in the Texas Rangers during the Mexican-American War. (See List of Texas county name etymologies.)


According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,334 km² (901 mi²). 2,255 km² (871 mi²) of it is land and 78 km² (30 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.36% water.

As of the census of 2000, there are 4,093 people, 1,791 households, and 1,156 families residing in the county. The population density is 2/km² (5/mi²). There are 2,820 housing units at an average density of 1/km² (3/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 90.96% White, 3.35% Black or African American, 0.59% Native American, 0.51% Asian, 0.12% Pacific Islander, 3.32% from other races, and 1.15% from two or more races. 9.33% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,791 households out of which 25.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.50% are married couples living together, 8.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.40% are non-families. 33.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 19.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.26 and the average family size is 2.86.

In the county, the population is spread out with 23.40% under the age of 18, 5.50% from 18 to 24, 21.40% from 25 to 44, 25.60% from 45 to 64, and 24.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 45 years. For every 100 females there are 89.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.70 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $24,627, and the median income for a family is $34,583. Males have a median income of $21,607 versus $19,571 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,384. 16.10% of the population and 12.90% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 26.30% of those under the age of 18 and 9.00% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
