Overview of Callahan County, Texas

Callahan County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 12,905. Its county seat is Baird. Callahan is named for James Hughes Callahan, a soldier during the Texas Revolution.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,334 km² (901 mi²). 2,327 km² (899 mi²) of it is land and 7 km² (3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.29% water.

As of the census of 2000, there are 12,905 people, 5,061 households, and 3,750 families residing in the county. The population density is 6/km² (14/mi²). There are 5,925 housing units at an average density of 3/km² (7/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 94.78% White, 0.22% Black or African American, 0.63% Native American, 0.26% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 2.70% from other races, and 1.35% from two or more races. 6.29% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 5,061 households out of which 31.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.60% are married couples living together, 9.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.90% are non-families. 23.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.53 and the average family size is 2.97.

In the county, the population is spread out with 26.20% under the age of 18, 6.60% from 18 to 24, 24.90% from 25 to 44, 25.30% from 45 to 64, and 17.00% who are 65 years of age or older.
