Comanche County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 14,026. Its county seat is Comanche. Comanche is named for the Comanche Native American Tribe.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,454 km² (948 mi²). 2,429 km² (938 mi²) of it is land and 26 km² (10 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.05% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 14,026 people, 5,522 households, and 3,926 families residing in the county. The population density is 6/km² (15/mi²). There are 7,105 housing units at an average density of 3/km² (8/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 87.30% White, 0.44% Black or African American, 0.61% Native American, 0.13% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 9.70% from other races, and 1.82% from two or more races. 20.88% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 5,522 households out of which 29.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.20% are married couples living together, 8.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.90% are non-families. 26.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.48 and the average family size is 2.98.

In the county, the population is spread out with 25.30% under the age of 18, 7.10% from 18 to 24, 23.30% from 25 to 44, 24.00% from 45 to 64, and 20.30% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 95.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.40 males.
