Ector County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 121,123. Its county seat is Odessa. Ector is named for Mathew Ector, a Confederate general in the Civil War.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,335 km² (902 mi²). 2,334 km² (901 mi²) of it is land and 2 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.07% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 121,123 people, 43,846 households, and 31,700 families residing in the county. The population density is 52/km² (134/mi²). There are 49,500 housing units at an average density of 21/km² (55/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 73.69% White, 4.61% Black or African American, 0.83% Native American, 0.64% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 17.38% from other races, and 2.81% from two or more races. 42.36% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 43,846 households out of which 38.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.10% are married couples living together, 13.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.70% are non-families. 24.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.72 and the average family size is 3.25.

In the county, the population is spread out with 30.40% under the age of 18, 10.50% from 18 to 24, 27.90% from 25 to 44, 20.20% from 45 to 64, and 10.90% who are 65 years of age or older.
