Overview of Fannin County, Texas

Fannin County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 31,242. Its county seat is Bonham. Fannin county is named for James Walker Fannin, Jr., the commander of the group of Texans killed in the Goliad Massacre during the Texas Revolution.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,329 km² (899 mi²). 2,309 km² (891 mi²) of it is land and 20 km² (8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.86% water.

As of the census of 2000, there are 31,242 people, 11,105 households, and 7,984 families residing in the county. The population density is 14/km² (35/mi²). There are 12,887 housing units at an average density of 6/km² (14/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 86.56% White, 7.96% Black or African American, 0.92% Native American, 0.26% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 2.78% from other races, and 1.49% from two or more races. 5.61% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 11,105 households out of which 31.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.90% are married couples living together, 10.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.10% are non-families. 25.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.51 and the average family size is 2.99.

In the county, the population is spread out with 23.20% under the age of 18, 8.90% from 18 to 24, 28.60% from 25 to 44, 23.20% from 45 to 64, and 16.10% who are 65 years of age or older.
