Gaines County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 14,467. Its county seat is Seminole. Gaines County is named for James Gaines, a merchant who signed the Texas Declaration of Independence.


According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 3,892 km² (1,503 mi²). 3,891 km² (1,502 mi²) of it is land and 1 km² (0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.03% water.
