Gonzales County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 18,628. Its county seat is Gonzales. Gonzales is named for its county seat.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,771 km² (1,070 mi²). 2,765 km² (1,068 mi²) of it is land and 5 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.19% water.

As of the census of 2000, there are 18,628 people, 6,782 households, and 4,876 families residing in the county. The population density is 7/km² (17/mi²). There are 8,194 housing units at an average density of 3/km² (8/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 72.25% White, 8.39% Black or African American, 0.53% Native American, 0.26% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 16.48% from other races, and 2.01% from two or more races. 39.62% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 6,782 households out of which 34.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.00% are married couples living together, 12.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.10% are non-families. 25.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.69 and the average family size is 3.21.
