Hemphill County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 3,351. Its county seat is Canadian. Hemphill County is named for John Hemphill, a judge and Confederate congressman.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,362 km² (912 mi²). 2,356 km² (910 mi²) of it is land and 6 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.26% water.

The racial makeup of the county is 87.65% White, 1.55% Black or African American, 0.72% Native American, 0.27% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 8.48% from other races, and 1.31% from two or more races. 15.58% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,280 households out of which 32.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 65.20% are married couples living together, 5.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.90% are non-families. 24.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.50 and the average family size is 2.98.
