Hockley County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 22,716. Its county seat is Levelland, and the county is named for George Washington Hockley, a Secretary of War of the Republic of Texas.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,353 km² (909 mi²). 2,352 km² (908 mi²) of it is land and 1 km² (0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.03% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 22,716 people, 7,994 households, and 6,091 families residing in the county. The population density is 10/km² (25/mi²). There are 9,148 housing units at an average density of 4/km² (10/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 74.38% White, 3.72% Black or African American, 0.82% Native American, 0.13% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 18.68% from other races, and 2.22% from two or more races. 37.24% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 7,994 households out of which 38.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.40% are married couples living together, 11.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.80% are non-families. 21.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.77 and the average family size is 3.22.
