Hutchinson County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 23,857. Its county seat is Stinnett. Hutchinson County is named for Andrew Hutchinson, an early attorney in Texas.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,318 km² (895 mi²). 2,298 km² (887 mi²) of it is land and 20 km² (8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.85% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 23,857 people, 9,283 households, and 6,869 families residing in the county. The population density is 10/km² (27/mi²). There are 10,871 housing units at an average density of 5/km² (12/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 87.00% White, 2.41% Black or African American, 1.35% Native American, 0.35% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 6.66% from other races, and 2.21% from two or more races. 14.70% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 9,283 households out of which 34.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.40% are married couples living together, 9.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.00% are non-families. 23.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.54 and the average family size is 3.00.
