Milam County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 24,238. Its county seat is Cameron. Milam County is named for Benjamin Rush Milam, an early settler and a soldier in the Texas Revolution.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,646 km² (1,022 mi²). 2,633 km² (1,017 mi²) of it is land and 13 km² (5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.48% water.

As of the census of 2000, there are 24,238 people, 9,199 households, and 6,595 families residing in the county. The population density is 9/km² (24/mi²). There are 10,866 housing units at an average density of 4/km² (11/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 78.89% White, 11.05% Black or African American, 0.50% Native American, 0.22% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 7.70% from other races, and 1.63% from two or more races. 18.63% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 9,199 households out of which 32.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.50% are married couples living together, 11.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.30% are non-families. 25.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.59 and the average family size is 3.11.

In the county, the population is spread out with 27.50% under the age of 18, 7.70% from 18 to 24, 24.70% from 25 to 44, 22.90% from 45 to 64, and 17.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 96.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.60 males.
