Overview of Montague County, Texas

Montague County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 19,117. Its county seat is Montague. Montague is named for Daniel Montague, a surveyor and soldier in the Mexican-American War.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,431 km² (938 mi²). 2,410 km² (931 mi²) of it is land and 20 km² (8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.83% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 19,117 people, 7,770 households, and 5,485 families residing in the county. The population density is 8/km² (20/mi²). There are 9,862 housing units at an average density of 4/km² (11/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 95.95% White, 0.18% Black or African American, 0.74% Native American, 0.26% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.64% from other races, and 1.21% from two or more races. 5.41% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 7,770 households out of which 28.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.10% are married couples living together, 8.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.40% are non-families. 27.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.41 and the average family size is 2.91.

In the county, the population is spread out with 24.00% under the age of 18, 6.80% from 18 to 24, 24.30% from 25 to 44, 25.10% from 45 to 64, and 19.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 92.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.80 males.
