Overview of Moore County, Texas

Moore County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 20,121. Its county seat is Dumas. Moore is named for Edwin Ward Moore, the commander of the Texas Navy for the Republic of Texas.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,356 km² (910 mi²). 2,330 km² (900 mi²) of it is land and 26 km² (10 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.09% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 20,121 people, 6,774 households, and 5,331 families residing in the county. The population density is 9/km² (22/mi²). There are 7,478 housing units at an average density of 3/km² (8/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 63.93% White, 0.69% Black or African American, 0.67% Native American, 0.86% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 31.20% from other races, and 2.62% from two or more races. 47.50% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 6,774 households out of which 44.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 65.10% are married couples living together, 9.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 21.30% are non-families. 18.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.94 and the average family size is 3.36.

In the county, the population is spread out with 33.60% under the age of 18, 9.20% from 18 to 24, 28.40% from 25 to 44, 18.30% from 45 to 64, and 10.60% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 30 years. For every 100 females there are 100.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.40 males.
