Newton County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 15,072. Its county seat is Newton. Newton county is named for John Newton, a veteran of the Revolutionary War.


According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,433 km² (940 mi²). 2,416 km² (933 mi²) of it is land and 18 km² (7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.73% water.

The racial makeup of the county is 75.84% White, 20.69% Black or African American, 0.63% Native American, 0.27% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.56% from other races, and 0.98% from two or more races. 3.79% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 5,583 households out of which 32.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.10% are married couples living together, 11.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.70% are non-families. 24.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.59 and the average family size is 3.07.

In the county, the population is spread out with 26.20% under the age of 18, 9.00% from 18 to 24, 26.60% from 25 to 44, 24.10% from 45 to 64, and 14.20% who are 65 years of age or older.
