Panola County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 22,756. Panola County is located in East Texas and is named for an Native American word for cotton. Its county seat is Carthage.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,127 km² (821 mi²). 2,074 km² (801 mi²) of it is land and 53 km² (20 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.49% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 22,756 people, 8,821 households, and 6,395 families residing in the county. The population density is 11/km² (28/mi²). There are 10,524 housing units at an average density of 5/km² (13/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 78.78% White, 17.67% Black or African American, 0.36% Native American, 0.24% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.87% from other races, and 1.07% from two or more races. 3.51% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 8,821 households out of which 32.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.90% are married couples living together, 11.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.50% are non-families. 25.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.53 and the average family size is 3.02.

In the county, the population is spread out with 25.20% under the age of 18, 9.20% from 18 to 24, 25.10% from 25 to 44, 24.60% from 45 to 64, and 15.80% who are 65 years of age or older.
