Reeves County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 13,137. Its county seat is Pecos. Reeves County is named for George R. Reeves, a Texas state legislator and colonel in the Confederate Army.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 6,843 km² (2,642 mi²). 6,827 km² (2,636 mi²) of it is land and 16 km² (6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.23% water.

As of the census of 2000, there are 13,137 people, 4,091 households, and 3,129 families residing in the county. The population density is 2/km² (5/mi²). There are 5,043 housing units at an average density of 1/km² (2/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 79.33% White, 2.10% Black or African American, 0.51% Native American, 0.35% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 15.03% from other races, and 2.68% from two or more races. 73.38% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,091 households out of which 38.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.60% are married couples living together, 12.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.50% are non-families. 21.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.93 and the average family size is 3.45.

In the county, the population is spread out with 29.90% under the age of 18, 11.30% from 18 to 24, 25.20% from 25 to 44, 21.00% from 45 to 64, and 12.60% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 112.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 115.40 males.
