San Augustine County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 8,946. Its county seat is San Augustine.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,534 km² (592 mi²). 1,367 km² (528 mi²) of it is land and 167 km² (64 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 10.86% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 8,946 people, 3,575 households, and 2,520 families residing in the county. The population density is 7/km² (17/mi²). There are 5,356 housing units at an average density of 4/km² (10/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 69.26% White, 27.95% Black or African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.64% from other races, and 0.75% from two or more races. 3.58% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,575 households out of which 26.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.50% are married couples living together, 13.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.50% are non-families. 27.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.43 and the average family size is 2.93.
