Shelby County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 25,224. Its county seat is Center. The county is named for Isaac Shelby, a soldier in the American Revolution.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,161 km² (835 mi²). 2,057 km² (794 mi²) of it is land and 105 km² (40 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.84% water.

As of the census of 2000, there are 25,224 people, 9,595 households, and 6,908 families residing in the county. The population density is 12/km² (32/mi²). There are 11,955 housing units at an average density of 6/km² (15/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 72.65% White, 19.44% Black or African American, 0.36% Native American, 0.23% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 5.87% from other races, and 1.44% from two or more races. 9.87% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 9,595 households out of which 32.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.10% are married couples living together, 12.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.00% are non-families. 25.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.59 and the average family size is 3.08.
