Sutton County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 4,077. Its county seat is Sonora. Sutton County is named for John S. Sutton, an officer in the Confederate Army.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 3,767 km² (1,454 mi²). 3,765 km² (1,454 mi²) of it is land and 2 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.04% water.

The racial makeup of the county is 75.28% White, 0.25% Black or African American, 0.42% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 22.27% from other races, and 1.62% from two or more races. 51.66% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,515 households out of which 38.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.60% are married couples living together, 7.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.40% are non-families. 22.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.67 and the average family size is 3.15.
