Swisher County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 8,378. Its county seat is Tulia. The county is named for James G. Swisher, a soldier of the Texas Revolution.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,333 km² (901 mi²). 2,332 km² (900 mi²) of it is land and 1 km² (0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.03% water.

The racial makeup of the county is 71.75% White, 5.85% Black or African American, 0.54% Native American, 0.16% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 19.41% from other races, and 2.28% from two or more races. 35.22% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,925 households out of which 35.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.20% are married couples living together, 9.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.40% are non-families. 24.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.65 and the average family size is 3.15.
