Wichita County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 131,664. Its county seat is Wichita Falls.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,639 km² (633 mi²). 1,626 km² (628 mi²) of it is land and 14 km² (5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.85% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 131,664 people, 48,441 households, and 32,891 families residing in the county. The population density is 81/km² (210/mi²). There are 53,304 housing units at an average density of 33/km² (85/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 78.76% White, 10.23% Black or African American, 0.89% Native American, 1.84% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 5.51% from other races, and 2.68% from two or more races. 12.23% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 48,441 households out of which 33.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.30% are married couples living together, 11.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.10% are non-families. 27.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.49 and the average family size is 3.04.

In the county, the population is spread out with 25.20% under the age of 18, 13.70% from 18 to 24, 29.00% from 25 to 44, 19.50% from 45 to 64, and 12.70% who are 65 years of age or older.
