Overview of Rich County, Utah

Rich County is a county located in the state of Utah. Half of Bear Lake as well as half of Bear Lake Valley lie on the northern edge of the county. The Bear River Valley lies on the eastern edge. The elevation of these valleys is close to 6000 feet, and the rest of the county is covered by mountains, including the Bear River Range. Because of the high elevation the climate is cold in winter and mild in summer, and the population is limited. As of the 2000 Census the population was 1,961, and by 2004 had been estimated to increase to 2,054. It was named for an early LDS apostle, Charles C. Rich. Its county seat and largest city is Randolph.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,813 km² (1,086 mi²). 2,664 km² (1,029 mi²) of it is land and 150 km² (58 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 5.32% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 1,961 people, 645 households, and 521 families residing in the county. The population density is 1/km² (2/mi²). There are 2,408 housing units at an average density of 1/km² (2/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 98.16% White, 0.00% Black or African American, 0.05% Native American, 0.41% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.92% from other races, and 0.46% from two or more races. 1.84% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 645 households out of which 42.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 74.40% are married couples living together, 3.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 19.10% are non-families. 17.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.01 and the average family size is 3.44.

In the county, the population is spread out with 34.60% under the age of 18, 7.20% from 18 to 24, 22.20% from 25 to 44, 21.90% from 45 to 64, and 14.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 103.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 102.50 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $39,766, and the median income for a family is $44,783. Males have a median income of $34,464 versus $22,396 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,267. 10.20% of the population and 6.50% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 11.30% of those under the age of 18 and 6.30% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
