Overview of Orleans County, Vermont

Orleans County is a county located in the state of Vermont. As of 2000, the population is 26,277. Its county seat is Newport.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,868 km² (721 mi²). 1,807 km² (698 mi²) of it is land and 61 km² (23 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.25% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 26,277 people, 10,446 households, and 7,155 families residing in the county. The population density is 15/km² (38/mi²). There are 14,673 housing units at an average density of 8/km² (21/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 97.16% White, 0.37% Black or African American, 0.65% Native American, 0.30% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.13% from other races, and 1.37% from two or more races. 0.72% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 10,446 households out of which 32.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.40% are married couples living together, 9.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.50% are non-families. 25.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.45 and the average family size is 2.91.

In the county, the population is spread out with 25.10% under the age of 18, 7.10% from 18 to 24, 26.80% from 25 to 44, 25.90% from 45 to 64, and 15.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 98.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.10 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $31,084, and the median income for a family is $36,630. Males have a median income of $27,964 versus $20,779 for females.
