Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 929 km² (359 mi²). 924 km² (357 mi²) of it is land and 5 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.49% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 11,400 people, 4,240 households, and 3,175 families residing in the county. The population density is 12/km² (32/mi²). There are 4,609 housing units at an average density of 5/km² (13/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 70.57% White, 28.05% Black or African American, 0.28% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.25% from other races, and 0.67% from two or more races. 0.80% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
