Brunswick County is a county located in the state of Virginia. As of 2000, the population is 18,419. Its county seat is Lawrenceville.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,475 km² (569 mi²). 1,466 km² (566 mi²) of it is land and 8 km² (3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.57% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 18,419 people, 6,277 households, and 4,312 families residing in the county. The population density is 13/km² (32/mi²). There are 7,541 housing units at an average density of 5/km² (13/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 41.99% White, 56.85% Black or African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.22% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.34% from other races, and 0.51% from two or more races. 1.25% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 6,277 households out of which 27.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.90% are married couples living together, 16.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.30% are non-families. 27.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.47 and the average family size is 3.00.

In the county, the population is spread out with 20.50% under the age of 18, 9.90% from 18 to 24, 30.70% from 25 to 44, 24.40% from 45 to 64, and 14.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 113.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 115.40 males.
