Overview of Charlotte County, Virginia

Charlotte County is a county located in the state of Virginia. As of 2000, the population is 12,472. Its county seat is Charlotte Court House, and it is named for Queen Charlotte, wife of King George III of England.

The county’s high school is Randolph-Henry High School, named for John Randolph and Patrick Henry, who both lived in the county.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,237 km² (477 mi²). 1,230 km² (475 mi²) of it is land and 6 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.51% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 12,472 people, 4,951 households, and 3,435 families residing in the county. The population density is 10/km² (26/mi²). There are 5,734 housing units at an average density of 5/km² (12/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 65.51% White, 32.89% Black or African American, 0.14% Native American, 0.16% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.70% from other races, and 0.59% from two or more races. 1.65% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,951 households out of which 28.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.50% are married couples living together, 13.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.60% are non-families. 27.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.47 and the average family size is 3.00.

In the county, the population is spread out with 24.30% under the age of 18, 7.20% from 18 to 24, 26.20% from 25 to 44, 24.80% from 45 to 64, and 17.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 92.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.70 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $28,929, and the median income for a family is $34,830. Males have a median income of $26,918 versus $20,307 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,717. 18.10% of the population and 12.70% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 22.10% of those under the age of 18 and 20.80% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
