Madison County is a county located in the state of Virginia. As of 2000, the population is 12,520. Its county seat is Madison.

As of the census of 2000, there are 12,520 people, 4,739 households, and 3,521 families residing in the county. The population density is 15/km² (39/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 86.71% White, 11.41% Black or African American, 0.14% Native American, 0.50% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.29% from other races, and 0.93% from two or more races. 0.77% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
