Northumberland County is a county located on the Northern Neck in the state of Virginia. As of 2000, the population is 12,259. Its county seat is Heathsville.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 740 km² (286 mi²). 498 km² (192 mi²) of it is land and 242 km² (93 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 32.68% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 12,259 people, 5,470 households, and 3,785 families residing in the county. The population density is 25/km² (64/mi²). There are 8,057 housing units at an average density of 16/km² (42/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 72.18% White, 26.58% Black or African American, 0.15% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.33% from other races, and 0.56% from two or more races. 0.93% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 5,470 households out of which 20.11% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.30% are married couples living together, 8.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.80% are non-families. 27.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
