Boone County is a county located in the state of West Virginia. As of 2000, the population is 25,535. Its county seat is Madison. Boone County is named for hunter and explorer Daniel Boone.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,303 km² (503 mi²). 1,303 km² (503 mi²) of it is land and 1 km² (0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.04% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 25,535 people, 10,291 households, and 7,460 families residing in the county. The population density is 20/km² (51/mi²). There are 11,575 housing units at an average density of 9/km² (23/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 98.53% White, 0.65% Black or African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.07% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.07% from other races, and 0.54% from two or more races. 0.46% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 10,291 households out of which 31.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.50% are married couples living together, 10.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.50% are non-families. 24.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.47 and the average family size is 2.92.
