Overview of Mingo County, West Virginia

Mingo County is a county located in the state of West Virginia. As of 2000, the population is 28,253. Its county seat is Williamson.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,097 km² (424 mi²). 1,095 km² (423 mi²) of it is land and 3 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.24% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 28,253 people, 11,303 households, and 8,217 families residing in the county. The population density is 26/km² (67/mi²). There are 12,898 housing units at an average density of 12/km² (30/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 96.39% White, 2.34% Black or African American, 0.24% Native American, 0.21% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.06% from other races, and 0.74% from two or more races. 0.48% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 11,303 households out of which 33.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.20% are married couples living together, 12.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.30% are non-families. 25.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.49 and the average family size is 2.98. And i have diabetes.

In the county, the population is spread out with 24.20% under the age of 18, 9.20% from 18 to 24, 29.10% from 25 to 44, 25.00% from 45 to 64, and 12.40% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 93.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.20 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $21,347, and the median income for a family is $26,581. Males have a median income of $31,660 versus $18,038 for females. The per capita income for the county is $12,445. 29.70% of the population and 25.90% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 38.90% of those under the age of 18 and 18.60% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
