Roane County is a county located in the state of West Virginia. As of 2000, the population is 15,446. Its county seat is Spencer.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,253 km² (484 mi²). 1,252 km² (484 mi²) of it is land and 0 km² (0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.04% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 15,446 people, 6,161 households, and 4,479 families residing in the county. The population density is 12/km² (32/mi²). There are 7,360 housing units at an average density of 6/km² (15/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 98.56% White, 0.22% Black or African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.23% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.19% from other races, and 0.60% from two or more races. 0.67% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 6,161 households out of which 30.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.10% are married couples living together, 9.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.30% are non-families. 23.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.49 and the average family size is 2.91.
