Tyler County is a county located in the state of West Virginia. As of 2000, the population is 9,592. Its county seat is Middlebourne.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 675 km² (261 mi²). 667 km² (258 mi²) of it is land and 8 km² (3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.20% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 9,592 people, 3,836 households, and 2,834 families residing in the county. The population density is 14/km² (37/mi²). There are 4,780 housing units at an average density of 7/km² (19/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 99.35% White, 0.02% Black or African American, 0.05% Native American, 0.08% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.03% from other races, and 0.45% from two or more races. 0.43% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,836 households out of which 30.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.40% are married couples living together, 8.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.10% are non-families. 23.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.47 and the average family size is 2.89.

In the county, the population is spread out with 23.30% under the age of 18, 6.50% from 18 to 24, 26.90% from 25 to 44, 26.90% from 45 to 64, and 16.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 95.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.90 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $29,290, and the median income for a family is $35,320. Males have a median income of $34,250 versus $18,140 for females.
