Overview of Portage County, Wisconsin

Portage County is a county located in the state of Wisconsin. As of 2000, the population is 67,182. Its county seat is Stevens Point. The United States Census Bureau’s Stevens Point Micropolitan Statistical Area includes all of Portage County.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,131 km² (823 mi²). 2,088 km² (806 mi²) of it is land and 43 km² (16 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.00% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 67,182 people, 25,040 households, and 16,501 families residing in the county. The population density is 32/km² (83/mi²). There are 26,589 housing units at an average density of 13/km² (33/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 95.73% White, 0.32% Black or African American, 0.36% Native American, 2.25% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.43% from other races, and 0.86% from two or more races. 1.44% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 25,040 households out of which 32.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.10% are married couples living together, 7.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.10% are non-families. 24.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.54 and the average family size is 3.07.

In the county, the population is spread out with 24.10% under the age of 18, 16.20% from 18 to 24, 27.70% from 25 to 44, 21.10% from 45 to 64, and 10.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 99.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.80 males.
