Wisconsin is a member state of the United States of America. Located between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River, it covers an area of 145 439 km2 and has a population of 5 511 400 (2004).
It is bathed by Lake Superior to the north and Lake Michigan to the east and bordering the states of Michigan to the northeast, Illinois to the south, Iowa to the southwest and Minnesota to the west. The capital is the city of Madison. The relief of the region was modeled by the quaternaires glaciers (lake basins, deposits related to moraine). The plain of Lake Michigan, which is created to the west in a culminating plateau to the north to 603 m to the mount Arvon, occupies the east of the State.
The main rivers are the Mississippi and its tributaries, Wisconsin and the Holy Cross. Lake Winnebago is the state’s largest inland lake. Wisconsin’s climate is humid continental; however, the north is characterized by particularly harsh climatic conditions and poor soils. The forest – maple, birch, fir, PIN and oak -, mainly present in the northern part, covers about 46% of the territory.
