Overview of Johnson County, Wyoming

Johnson County is a county located in the north central of the state of Wyoming. It lies to the southeast of the Bighorn mountains on Interstate Highway I-25. Buffalo is the county seat. The Powder river flows northward through eastern Johnson County. As of 2000, the population is 7,075.

History

Johnson County was organized in 1875. It was the scene in April, 1892 of the Johnson County War, also known as the War on Powder River, a rangewar between large cattle outfits and small stockgrowers (allegedly rustlers).

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 10,812 km² (4,175 mi²). 10,791 km² (4,166 mi²) of it is land and 22 km² (8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.20% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 7,075 people, 2,959 households, and 2,006 families residing in the county. The population density is 1/km² (2/mi²). There are 3,503 housing units at an average density of 0/km² (1/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 97.03% White, 0.08% Black or African American, 0.64% Native American, 0.11% Asian, 0.55% from other races, and 1.58% from two or more races. 2.09% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,959 households out of which 28.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.00% are married couples living together, 7.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.20% are non-families. 28.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.36 and the average family size is 2.89.

In the county the population is spread out with 24.20% under the age of 18, 5.60% from 18 to 24, 23.50% from 25 to 44, 28.70% from 45 to 64, and 18.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 96.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.30 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $34,012, and the median income for a family is $42,299. Males have a median income of $29,271 versus $20,469 for females. The per capita income for the county is $19,030. 10.10% of the population and 7.20% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 9.10% of those under the age of 18 and 10.60% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
